Why your marketing isn’t working.

Clue: It could be your strategy.

Most business owners get stuck on their marketing plan

How often do you hear someone say (or think yourself) “my marketing isn’t working”?

If I hear this, one of the first questions I ask is, “what are you actually doing to market your business?” And quite often, I’m met with silence or, “I’ve tried everything, but nothing’s working.”

The truth is, marketing rarely fails because the business is wrong.

It usually fails because the strategy is unclear, inconsistent, or built on assumptions that results are instant.

Here’s what marketing really is and how to move forward when things feel stuck.

1. Marketing is consistency with strategy

Marketing isn’t something you do once, hope it works, and never revisit (although imagine if that did work, it would be great!).

It needs consistent action and a clear strategy behind it, otherwise you’re just posting for the sake of posting.

It’s this combination that helps clients get to know you and understand your business. Only when people trust you and understand what you offer will they enter your sales process and complete a transaction.

2. If your marketing isn’t working, refine your strategy

When things go quiet, most people assume they need to post more, offer more, or cut costs.

But none of that solves the problem if you don’t have a strategy.

If your marketing isn’t working, pause for a moment and ask yourself:

  • Is your messaging speaking to the right people?
  • Are you clear about what you offer?
  • Are you turning up consistently?
  • Is your website helping or confusing potential clients?
  • Does your messaging online and in-person reflect what your audience is looking for?
  • What do your analytics or Search Console reveal about how people are actually finding you (if at all)?

And if you feel the answers to these questions are all “yes,” it’s worth asking someone you trust to give an honest reply to the same questions. Quite often, as business owners, we’re so attached to what we do that we don’t see what others see (or don’t see).

3. How to build on what’s already working

Sometimes marketing is working just not as much as you’d like.

This is where most businesses miss the opportunity.

If you’re seeing some engagement and enquiries, the answer isn’t to start something completely new. It’s to lean into what’s already showing signs of movement and then look for the next area to expand.

It might be improving your best-performing service page, posting more of the content people already respond to, or adapting the way you respond to enquiries. If someone has taken the time to fill in your contact form, they’re already warm to your service. If they’re not becoming “hot,” look at how you can improve this, whether it’s the length of time it takes you to reply to them or the information you’re sending them.

Growth usually comes from building on what’s working, not reinventing everything.

4. Show up with intention

Whatever stage you’re at, the most important part of marketing is intention.

Your message, your content, your website, your visibility; every touch point should have a purpose.

Marketing becomes easier when you’re clear about what you want to achieve, because it gives clients clarity about what you do.

When people understand you, they trust you. And when they trust you, they buy from you.
